Here are boats entering the locks from the other end
| | |
| | |
| | |
to pass thru these locks is $0.90 per foot of boat length per lock. there are five locks shown here so a 20 foot boat cost 5*0.90*20 = $90 to pass one way.
| | |
It took these two pleasure boats over an hour to make it through the five lock gates
| | |
Tourist can walk across the lock gates when closed
| | |
| | |
| | |
The locks are drained during the winter and the city side freezes and they use it as a skating rink during the winter months!

This is Kumo, the large Robotic Spider and the second La Machine roaming Ottawa
| | |
The crowds were huge and each robot is followed by a small orchestra playing wonderful music
| | |
| | |
| | |

We learned that there is a sculpture of Joan of Arc in a park here where they introduced Oh Canada, the national anthem. The Sculptor was Anna Hunnington, the same lady who built Atalaya on the coast of South Carolina and Brookgreen Gardens.
| | |
| | |
| | |

| | |
| | |

A lot of tourists were everywhere, especially later in the afternoon
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
We left the city to return to the other side of the river
| | |
Disembarking in Levis, you can see the fountains being used by kids and adults to cool off
| | |
On the way from Quebec City to Riviere du loup, we saw these signs
| | |
We rode along the St Lawrence river
| | |
| | |
| | |
In Riviere du loup we stopped to se lPiloup, this seal was the mascot of the first provincial Games of Quebec, held in Riviere-du-Loup in 1971
| | |
| | |
| | |
Then we turned right heading inland to New Brunswick
| | |
We started seeing these type of signs pretty quick and we stayed in Moose territory all the way to Fredericton.
| | |
We stopped at Grand Falls in New Brunswick, they even had a zip line
| | |
There were beautiful rock formations and below the dam was a wonderful river gorge
| | |
Went by Hartland to see the longest covered bridge in the world on the Saint John River

| | |
| | |
We headed toward Nova Scotia and stopped in Moncton, New Brunswick at Magnetic Hill |
| | |
You put your car in neutral and it backs up by itself up hill for about 100 yards...really amazing!
| | |
| | |
| | |
Etchy observed some of the youth in Moncton, just prescious
| | |
We stopped at the visitors center to learn about the Fundy tides in the area
| | |
We visited Shediac on the northeastern coast of New Brunswick
| | |
With a very interesting attraction,
| | |
a lobsterman and the largest lobster in the world
| | |
Cornee had us on another dirt road trying to view the Prince Edward Island bridge
| | |
This one ran into the water on the west side of the bridge and you can see Prince Edward Island in the distance
| | |
Heading south west, we entered Nova Scotia
| | |
And found the Blueberry man at Oxford
| | |
And we found a Mastadon, Flintstone's car,
| | |
Flintstone's home, smiley face built into a hill,
| | |
45th parallel marker, | |
| | |
And a stone polar bear at a roadside attraction.
| | |
Not far away we found the real 45th parallel marker at the end of a dirt road in someone's yard.
| | |
We arrived safely at our hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia
| | |
Stopped at Peggy's Cove and had breakfast admiring this famous lighthouse/post office.
| | |
| | |
| | |
A fog had set in at Peggy's Cove and we learned to not wish away the fog
| | |
Because it is free (can come and go as it pleases)!
| | |
That is Oak Island in the distance to the right
| | |
We thought this was as close as we would get to Oak Island
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
But we found the causeway and they have opened an Interpretive center just this year
| | |
We got to not only put a foot on the Island, we also got to see artifacts from the digs
| | |
The memorial to the six that have died. Legend says 7 will die before the treasure is found.
| | |
| | |
| | |
We drove through the lovely town of Mahone Bay
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
We visited Lunenburg, a UNESCO town on the southern shore of Nova Scotia
| | |
| |
| | |
We drove around the Blue Rocks area. We found out a 1) Bluenose is a pompous person
| |
or 2) A person from Nova Scotia
| | |
We headed back north across the island to Halls Harbour
| | |
| | |
| | |
We were on a quest to see the Fundy tides
| | |
| | |
| | |
On the way we went by Grand Pre on the Evangeline Trail
| | |
the area Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote about in his poem "Evangeline"
| | |
Then we stopped on the "Brow Road" at the Bromfild Lookoff
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
We found Hall's Harbour and the Lobster Pound
| | |
The tide was out and would rise around 30 feet in the next six hours
| | |
The harbour is named for a Pirate that once used it as his hideout
| | |
Etchy walked down into the Harbour where the boats were stranded until the tide comes in
| | |
| | |
| | |
Instead of walking in the pluffmud, I decided to taste the local fare
| | |
When in Rome? | |
| | |
This is the lobster cooker!
| | |
Etchy walked out to the shore of the Bay of Fundy at low tide
| | |
| | |
| | |
While Etchy was at the water's edge, Cornee saw a whale jump in the Bay of Fundy
| | |
Etchy took this picture from outside the harbour on the dry shore at low tide
| | |
This is a rock with damp moss on it. When they dry the moss turns green
| | |
We visited the Titanic Memorial Graves at Fairview Cemetery in Halifax
| | |
Caught a bus from Lady Hammond Street to the corner of Barrinington & Duke Streets
| | |
We made our way to the waterfront on Halifax Harbour
| | |
| | |
| | |
We walked along the waterfront and across the floating walkway |
| | |
We toured the Canadian Maritime Museum, this is a Canadian mine |
| | |
They had a great Titanic exhibit and an actual deck chair from the ship. This is a reproduction you could sit in, just could not do it! |
| | |
| | |
| | |
On the waterfront they were having their annual Buskers Festival over Canada's Natal Day weekend. This is Silver Elvis |
| | |
He was coin activated, would only do moves when someone placed money in the buckets |
| | |
Look what happened when Etchy gave this Busker money! |
| | |
And when Etchy gave" out of this world" busker a donation!
| | |
A Busker is a street entertainer and a lot of them gather for this event every year
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
Etchy watched this contortionist Busker on the boardwalk
| | |
| | |
| | |
Now watch what she does next

Can you believe she is in that box and with a soccer ball
| | |
There was a regatta in the harbour and Etchy won a prize at the watergun game at the games and rides section of the festival
| | |
We toured the Maritime Museum, watch their Omnimax movie on a whale on the Bay of Fundy and toured this military ship docked in front of the museum.
| | |
From the deck of the HMCS Sackville you can see their permanently docked vessel you can tour.
We left Halifax and arrived in Moncton at the Bore Park to see the Tidal Bore |
The Bay of Fundy Tidal Bore happens twice a day when the tide starts to come inland |
| | |
We saw the Tidal Bore arrive up the Chocolate River at 9:42 am (was estimated to be 9:57)
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
This was the water level only about 40 minutes later, it fills very fast
| | |
This was a bird that sat on the rail on the stairway down to the Hopewell Rocks on Fundy Bay
| | |
You can walk on the beach around these rocks for three hours before and after low tide
| | |
The tide variance can be as much as 35 feet between low and high tides
| | |
After visiting the Bay of Fundy National Park, we found this graveyard on our way to Saint John, New Brunswick
| | |
Henry and Anne Cook arrived at Dalhousie New Brunswick from Ireland and settled in the South Branch area close to the Bay of Fundy
| | |
| | |
| | |
They were Baptist farming family whose children moved inland and some ended up in Spencer, Iowa. Cornee's mother was one of their descendents. |
We made our way to the Saint John River's Reversing Falls.
| | |
When we first arrived, the tide was lowering, but the falls were not yet showing
| | |
| | |
| | |
As the water level decreased, you could see more whirlpools starting to show
| | |
Starting not far upstream on the other side of the bridges there is a four tier water fall (underwater) that drops around 200 feet just past the near side of the bridge
| | |
That is what causes the whirlpools and rapids to appear as the tide goes out
| | |
| | |
| | |
As the water continues to drop, the rapids and whirlpools increase on the surface
| | |
While we were at this offlook a heavy metal band was there for their album cover photoshoot
| | |
| | |
| | |
Its an amazing site at low tide, tomorrow we will see the river reverse at high tide when the Bay of Fundy tidal bore comes up stream and actually elevates the water level into the river up past the two bridges so that all of the rapids and whirlpools disappear and it appears the river changes it flow to upstream.
| | |

| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
Beside the reversing falls is a monument remembering 5 who died in a gas station explosion in 1974
| | |
When we arrived at the bridge and visitor's center, the river was running in the opposite direction from yesterday
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
we crossed under the bridge/road
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
we also watched the Zip liners on the other side of the bridges
| | |
This boat was waiting for the Slack Tide (lasts 20 minutes) to go up the river inland
| | |
| | |
| | |
We drove along the coast outside of Saint John by Musquash Marsh to Chance Harbor, Crow Island and Dipper Cove
| | |

| | |
At the Portland Head Lighthouse, there is a memorial on the rock to a shipwreck of the Annie C. Maguire which smashed into the rocks on Christmas Eve in 1886.
